Baby boy names in Telugu refers to a checked list of boy names used in Telugu-speaking families, each shown with its Telugu script, meaning, origin and style. Most come from Sanskrit. You can browse them by theme, by letter or by the birth-star syllable your pandit gives you.
Telugu is the mother tongue of about 81.1 million people in India, according to the 2011 Census (as summarised on Wikipedia). That’s a huge pool of families, and every one of them wants a name that works in Guntur and in a Dallas classroom. Don’t panic if you haven’t picked yet — you’ve got time.

Most Popular Modern Telugu Baby Boy Names for 2026?
The most popular modern Telugu baby boy names in 2026 are short, Sanskrit-rooted names with soft endings. According to Mylo’s October 2026 guide to Telugu names, there is no official ranking, but families often choose Aarav, Advaith, Abhiram, Saketh, Vamsi, Reyansh, Yashwanth, Karthik, Sathvik and Charan. All are easy to spell in English and Telugu.

Here’s the thing: “modern” in Telugu homes rarely means invented. It usually means a Sanskrit name that fits an English-speaking classroom. I’ve seen conflicting data on Aarav some sources call it a Sanskrit word for “peaceful”, others treat it as a modern coinage. My read is the second, so the table tags it “Sanskrit-based (modern)”.
- Vihaan: dawn, a new morning
- Advaith: one without a second
- Saketh: Ayodhya, the city of Lord Rama
- Reyansh: a ray of light

The best starting letter for a Telugu baby boy’s name usually comes from his birth star. According to Drik Panchang, the 27 nakshatras are each split into four padas, giving 108 naming syllables. The Moon’s position at birth sets the nakshatra and pada, so the exact time and place of birth decide the syllable.
Which Are Classic and Unique Telugu Boy Names?
Classic names are the ones every grandparent can say without a pause: Srikanth, Prashanth, Ramesh and Suresh. Rarer picks like Nachiketh, Thrishul and Sarvajith are unlikely to repeat in a classroom. Most people assume classic means plain the table says otherwise, because several carry epic or Upanishadic roots.
Telugu boy names are mostly Sanskrit names given a Telugu spelling, not a separate pool. According to Mylo’s 2026 guide, that spelling often ends in “-th”, as in Siddharth, Hemanth and Yashwanth, and it favours devotion to Lord Venkateswara. A few names are purely Telugu, such as Yedukondalu.

What Are Telugu Boy Names of Lord Venkateswara, Shiva, Krishna and Rama?
Names of the gods sit at the heart of Telugu naming. Venkatesh, Srinivas, Balaji and Govindaraju honour Lord Venkateswara of Tirumala. Mallikarjuna (Srisailam), Sriram (Bhadrachalam) and Narasimha (Yadagiri and Simhachalam) are just as loved across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where temple towns often give a boy his name.

Telugu homes often add -ayya, -anna or -ulu to a god’s name, so Venkata becomes Venkanna or Venkayya and Srinivasa becomes Srinivasulu. The table tags these home forms “Telugu”. Shiva, Krishna, Rama, Hanuman, Ganesha and Vishnu names follow in order.
- Venkateswara: Venkatesh, Srinivas, Balaji, Yedukondalu
- Shiva: Mahesh, Shankar, Mallikarjuna, Chandrashekar
- Krishna: Madhav, Keshav, Govind, Muralidhar
- Rama: Sriram, Raghuram, Kodandaram, Bhadradri

Modern Baby Boy Names in Telugu
If the first list wasn’t enough, this one leans even newer. Think Aahan, Aarush, Devansh and Utsav — names that sound current without losing their Sanskrit roots. They’re short, airy and easy for a school registrar to spell.
Many parents pair a modern first name with a traditional second one, so Advik Venkata or Ishaan Sriram keeps the grandparents happy and the passport simple. Parents who’ve tried this often report fewer family arguments. It’s a fair compromise.
- Aahan: the first light of dawn
- Devansh: a part of the divine
- Utsav: festival, celebration
- Siddhant: principle, doctrine

Some of these sage names double as gotra names, the lineages many Telugu families trace through the father. Ask an elder first. They will know which names your family always avoids. If you want a short name that still feels Telugu, here’s what actually works: pair it with a longer family name. Teja with Venkata, or Sai with a grandfather’s name, does the job. The short name handles everyday life, while the long one carries the heritage.

What Are Telugu Baby Boy Names by Nakshatra (Birth Star)?
Many Telugu families choose the first syllable of a boy’s name from his janma nakshatra, or birth star, and its pada, or quarter. There are 27 nakshatras with four padas each, so 108 syllables in all. The Moon’s position at the exact birth time decides which one your son gets.
Birth time matters. What most guides skip is how much: VedicMarga says an hour’s error can shift the syllable to the next one, and a Moon sitting near a pada boundary deserves a second look. Twins need separate readings, because the second baby can land in the next pada.
To pick a Telugu name by birth star, follow these steps:
- Note the exact birth date, time and place.
- Find the janma nakshatra and pada with a calculator.
- Read the starting syllable for that pada.
- Shortlist names that begin with it.
- Confirm the final choice with your family pandit.
Some pandits argue the syllable must come first, and everything else must follow. That’s valid for families who follow Swara Siddhanta strictly. But if you already love a name that doesn’t fit, you’ve got two real options: use the nearest syllable in the same nakshatra, or keep a ritual name and a different everyday name.
Two online calculators help here: the Drik Panchang Hindu Name Calculator and the VedicMarga Baby Name Calculator. Both take the birth date, time and place and return the nakshatra, pada and starting syllable. VedicMarga uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same as a Hindu panchang, so it won’t match a Western Sun sign.
Each cell below shows a syllable with up to five names from this article that start with that sound. Names are matched by first sound, so confirm the final pick with your pandit.

Want the whole list offline? Save this page as a PDF and keep it on your phone for the naming ceremony. Open your browser’s print option and choose Save as PDF.
Share the file with the grandparents and the family pandit so that everyone reads the same spelling, and cross out each name the family rejects. If a name gets crossed off, you’ll know which one and why.
How Do You Choose the Right Telugu Name for Your Son?
Start with the meaning you want him to carry. Then work through the checklist below, one step at a time, before the naming ceremony so nobody’s rushing on the day.
- Shortlist five names you love, whatever their first letter.
- Find the nakshatra syllable with the Drik Panchang or VedicMarga calculator once the birth time is known.
- Say the full name aloud five times with the surname and any initials.
- Fix one English spelling and use it on the birth certificate, Aadhaar and school records.
- Check the Sanskrit root in the Monier-Williams dictionary if the meaning matters to you.
Modern names vs traditional names: modern names are better suited to families who want short, easy-to-spell names that work abroad. Traditional names work better when the family follows deity or ancestor naming customs.
The key difference is whether the name is chosen for global ease or for family heritage. Then sleep on it. A name that still feels right after a night’s sleep is usually the one.
Conclusion
Pick the name you’re happy to say a thousand times. Shortlist a few from the tables, check the nakshatra syllable once he’s born, say each option with your surname, and let the grandparents settle his muddu peru.
